Metagenomics in the Diagnosis of Pneumonia: Protocol for a Systematic Review

Objective

This study aims to determine the clinical use of mNGS in Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP), Hospitalised Acquired Pneumonia (HAP), and Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP), compared with traditional microbiological methods.

Setting

Adult acute hospital in England.

Design

Systematic searches of the Embase, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases.

Participants

Searches were completed January 2024 returning 5,750 records.

Methods

The review was conducted and reported in keeping with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, and a completed PRISMA checklist will accompany any published results.

Results

Screening of returned papers and data extraction was completed by September 2024

Conclusions

A systematic review of the literature on the use of metagenomics in the management of pneumonia should clarify the current understanding of this topic of importance in terms of clinical burden and current existing unmet needs.
